Enhanced World Editing for Tiled

This is where I'll be putting up notes from my GSoC project with Tiled. What I'm reading, what I figured out, and what I want to build next.

Several tile maps arranged on a world grid

the short version

What's this project about

Tiled is a 2D level editor. People use it to build maps, tile layers, object layers, and other level data for their games. A world file lets you stitch a bunch of maps together so they show up as one bigger space.

My project builds on the world support that's already in Tiled. The idea is to make it nicer to arrange, resize, create, remove, and switch between maps once you're working in that bigger world view.

the plan

What I want to actually build

Here's what's on my list. I'm splitting these into smaller pieces I can ship one at a time.

World grid Grid lines that actually help when you're laying out whole maps.
Better snapping Make maps line up properly when you drag them around.
Resize maps in world view Add handles so you don't have to leave the world to do it.
Create maps from world view Just draw out where a new map should go and let it happen.
Remove or delete maps safely Keep deleting from disk explicit so nothing disappears by accident.
Default world and shared map view Make world editing easier to start with and easier to move around in.

Aug 31: drawing a new map straight into the world

With the World Tool on you can drag out a rectangle in empty world space and a new map shows up there, snapped to the world grid and matching the maps around it. Most of the work went into letting that map stay unsaved until you actually save it.

That's four slices in now, world grid then resize handles then default world then create maps. Full write-ups are in the updates log.
